Modbap Modular Osiris WavPak Volume 3 by Learning Modular’s Chris Meyer

Press release follows:

Modbap Modular announces availability of Osiris WavPak Volume 3, carefully crafted by Chris Meyer to integrate seamlessly with Eurorack module namesake

LOS ANGELES, CA, USA: Modbap Modular is proud to announce availability of Osiris WavPak Volume 3 — carefully crafted by Learning Modular’s Chris Meyer to integrate seamlessly with the black-owned electronic music instrument manufacturer’s own Osiris BI-FIDELITY WAVETABLE OSC (originally introduced to a captive audience at Knobcon Number Nine, Hyatt Regency Schaumburg, IL, USA, September 10-12, 2021), providing four banks of all-new custom 32 x 32 wavetables which have been meticulously curated and designed to expand anyone’s approach to wavetable synthesis using its Eurorack module namesake — as of November 2…

As the owner of Learning Modular, an online resource to help anyone master their modular synthesizer, Chris Meyer is perfectly positioned to help expand anyone’s approach to wavetable synthesis using Modbap Modular’s Osiris, operating powerfully in and of itself as a (frequency modulation- and phase modulation-including) seven-plus TIMBRE MODE 12HP BI-FIDELITYTM WAVETABLE OSC (oscillator) module, neatly-packed with an independent sub-oscillator, LOFI processing, extensive CV (control voltage) modulation capabilities, a PITCH quantiser, four banks of 32 x 32 wavetables, the ability to load user wavetables via Micro SD card (not included), and its own free open-source wavetable editor (OsirisEdit). After all, Chris Meyer is the talented individual responsible for creating the-then-trailblazing Vector Synthesis technology behind the 1986-vintage Prophet VS DIGITAL VECTOR SYNTHESIZER, supposedly intended to revive the flagging fortunes of US synth ‘giant’ Sequential for whom he worked in an engineering role. Subsequent stints at Digidesign, Music Maker Publications, and Tom Oberheim’s Marion Systems soon ensued, before becoming the Chief Engineer at the now-defunct Roland R&D US while serving also as Technical Chairman of the MIDI Manufacturer’s Association. A transition into the video and film industries followed thereafter as his storied career continued, coming full circle to ultimately end up where he originally started — playing with modular synthesizers.

Duly derived from Chris Meyer’s sizeable studio modular synthesizer — affectionately called The Monster, the four banks of all-new custom 32 x 32 wavetables included in Osiris WavPak Volume 3 are a result of undergoing a meticulous sampling process drawing upon the talents of one of the industry’s leading experts to offer Osiris owners a wide range of timbral possibilities catering to different sonic aesthetics: BANK A — otherwise known as the ‘East Coast’ bank — features wavetables that have been carefully crafted as a result of working with Livewire Electronics AFG’s Animated Pulses and Alien Saws waveforms, as well as Serge-filtered waveforms, using techniques such as audio rate waveform crossfading to offer a diverse palette of sounds, ranging from smooth and evolving textures to aggressive and cutting tones; BANK B — the ‘West Coast’ bank — incorporates techniques like Serge rectification, wave folding, and Serge resonant EQ, the resultinwavetables providing a more experimental and abstract sonic experience suited to those interested in pushing the boundaries of sound design and diving into harmonious tones and textures; BANK C — Formants — focuses on different vowel sounds with a sound design approach anchored around both digital and analogue formant filters for creating expressive vocal-like textures and tones that are ideal for adding a human touch to compositions or exploring more abstract and otherworldly sounds; and BANK D — Harmonics — utilises tube overdrive, filter banks inspired by both Buchla and Moog stylings, as well as featuring analogue and digital additive oscillators.

On the face of it, then, the results are all a testament to the expert craftsmanship involved in ensuring the highest-quality sound production possible. Put it this way: Osiris WavPak Volume 3’s four sound banks were sampled at 96kHz, perfectly aligning with the Osiris BI-FIDELITY WAVETABLE OSC module’s unique, high-quality 96kHz sample rate operation. Ultimately, users can enjoy pristine audio clarity, enabling exploration of full depth sonic landscapes.

Lending themselves a knowing nod in the direction of Chris Meyer’s trailblazing achievements, the X-axis in all the banks contain different waveforms, while the Y-axis introduces different harmonics for each X-wave; the harmonic series used in Osiris WavPak Volume 3 are: H1 (root up), H2 (one octave up), H3 (one octave, plus perfect fifth), H4 (two octaves up), H5 (two octaves, plus major third), H6 (two octaves, plus perfect fifth), and H8 (three octaves up). It is worth noting that in some cases — especially the filter banks, formant filters, and resonant EQ — the waveform also changes with ‘harmonic’ on the Y-axis, allowing for sculpting and refining patches with extraordinary detail thanks to this precise control over harmonic content. Modbap Modular encourages experimentation with different modulation sources patched to its Osiris BI-FIDELITY WAVETABLE OSC module’s WAVE Y to further enhance sonic explorations with the texture-rich Osiris WavPak Volume 3 — think velocity/accent from a sequencer or keyboard, a mod wheel, aftertouch, ribbon controller, or even a sample & hold triggered on each new note to create dynamic and evolving timbres that respond to playing style.

Osiris WavPak Volume 3 is available for free as a digital download exclusively from Modbap Modular’s online Shop here: https://www.modbap.com/products/osiris-wavpak-vol-3-by-chris-meyer

a NEW way to WAVETABLE! with Alias Zone & Osiris // Chris Meyer & ModBap at Knobcon 2023

video upload by DivKid

"Chris Meyer of Learning Modular & Alias Zone has A NEW WAY TO WAVETABLE!

Chris has been working on a new X and Y based wavetable systems that does two fascinating things, firstly it "samples" his whole large studio system while keeping that performable and responsive in the ModBap Modular Osiris and secondly he's using harmonics and interval sets to create morphing tunings within those sounds too.

The WavPak is out now through the ModBap site here // https://bit.ly/WavPak3-ChrisMeyer"

Hydrasynth Manager 2.1 Tutorial

ASM adds features and functions to perennially popular Hydrasynth range with major (2.0) firmware update available for free

LOS ANGELES, CA, USA/HONG KONG, CHINA: creativity-sparking sensational products provider Ashun Sound Machines (ASM) is proud to add features and functions to its perennially popular Hydrasynth range — comprising the original Hydrasynth keyboard and Hydrasynth desktop, announced to widespread critical acclaim in September 2019, followed by the flagship Hydrasynth Deluxe and portable Hydrasynth Explorer models announced in September 2021 — with a major (2.0) firmware update available for free as of March 15…

As an appealing appetiser, ASM’s major (2.0) firmware update adds three more memory banks to the Hydrasynth keyboard, desktop, and Explorer models, matching the Deluxe’s existing eight banks for a total of 1,024 patches. Put it this way: all are cutting-edge digital wave morphing synthesizers that positively invite their respective users to get involved in designing sounds, so more memory makes sense. Speaking of sound design, each Hydrasynth oscillator — OSC 1, OSC 2, and OSC 3 — now includes a new BitRedux (bit reduction) parameter that allows users to choose between OFF, 16, 12, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2 bits.

But — given that the 2.0 firmware update readily ranks as a major one — there is more, including more modulation options, thanks to a new modulation source called VoiceMod (voice modulator) that allows users to offset values for each voice that can then be applied in the Mod Matrix to vary chosen parameters per voice. Digging deeper, all five envelopes — ENV 1 through to ENV 5 — and LFOs (Low Frequency Oscillators) — LFO 1 through to LFO 5 — have new Quantize options, so adventurous users can quantize their outputs to achieve unique stepping effects. Excitingly, now it is possible to choose to advance through the steps with each new note on with the LFOs in Step mode, meaning users can play through the steps one by one with each new note press.

For flexibility in the studio or at home, Hydrasynth’s version 2.0 firmware update also allows users to bypass each of the (Pre-FX, Post-FX, Delay, and/or Reverb) effects globally in the system page — to record a dry signal without having to edit each patch, in other words. Thanks to the 2.0 firmware update, Hydrasynth users can choose how the sustain pedal operates. The three options available are: Sustain — traditional sustain (as it has always worked), Sostenuto — press and hold a single note while playing notes above it, and Mod Only — disables the sustain function, allowing users to then route it in the Mod Matrix.

Meanwhile, mention must briefly be made of other added features and functions, to include: Arp range expanded to six octaves; new Arp Step Offset parameter; Bank selection from browser window; ability to randomize all steps in LFO Step mode; new display Dim, On/Off options; Glissando mode added to Glide options; fine control for more subtle options offered by Vibrato; and Local On/Off status recalled (with in-screen reminder). As ASM CEO Glen Darcey duly concludes: “We hope you like the new features in 2.0. I would ask that you download the manual; there are some good tips and tricks on each of the new features and functions in there.”

Bastl Instruments Introduces Pizza and Softpop SP2

video upload by Bastl Instruments

"In the beginning, there was... Pizza. Listen."

Pizza FM & Wave-shaping Oscillator

We are very excited to finally introduce our first dedicated eurorack oscillator module called Pizza!

Pizza is a compact 8HP digital oscillator with powerful wave shaping applied to FM synthesis. Pizza offers a ton of flavor in a compact form, and it grants superb access with the assignable CTRL knob and CV, while its 3 different outputs allow for high patch flexibility. The unique take on FM synthesis combined with waveshaping offers a vast sonic palette while staying intuitive. Pizza is perfect for hybrid synthesis! Waveshaping on MAIN output gives you the world of additive techniques, while the PULSE and OSC OUT speak the subtractive language where mixing the outputs into a filter will sound massive!

Because of its digital nature, Pizza does not have to be tuned, and its approach to tuning is different. You only go to the Tune mode when you actually need to. Otherwise, the PITCH knob serves as either octave transpose or detune. Bastl's own VCO was brainstormed ever since we started producing modules, but Pizza has been in active development for the past 3 and a half years. It was developed by a team centered around our junior developer Martin Klecl, coded by Florian Helling, and supervised by Václav Peloušek, with contributions from Lennart Schierling and the whole Bastl team.

The first batch of Pizza preorders (300 units) starts: Wednesday 11th May 2022 at 20:00 CET Shipping in early June 2022. Price is 297 EUR including tax and 245 EUR excluding tax.

Softpop SP2

At the beginning of 2022, we introduced the desktop modular synthesizer Softpop SP2 – a collaboration between Casper Electronics a.k.a. Peter Edwards and Václav Peloušek of Bastl Instruments. Softpop SP2 is a radical subtractive synth under the influence of unconventional digital control. It’s a rare beast that excels at both melody and noise in equal measure.

There is a free major update coming to all Softpop SP2 users! There is a digital VCO hiding inside the SP2: users can switch a jumper inside the unit and update firmware via an audio file to access it! The digital oscillator has several new waveforms (generated on the original analog Triangle output) and gains the tuning precision and stability of a digital VCO! The firmware update will be available as a free download when the second batch, which is currently produced, will be available in the summer of 2022.

Waldorf M 1.07 RC Update Adds PPG Waveterm Transitions Replay, Additional Filter Modes & More

This one is via an anonymous reader. Full release notes below.

Regarding PPG Waveterm Transitions Reply:

"I always dreamed of PPG Waveterm Transitions replay. So there are they here in M! Now in classic mode one can use the second oscillator as a PCM oscillator and play one of the 64 transitions, saved into internal flash. They could be loaded from the SD Card to the M and used for your patch. So you can make 4 channel Drum Machine with analog and digital VCF on each channel. Or multisample layered patch. And the OSC1 stays free to play its own wavetable. So I am very curious, what you can introduce with this new feature."

"You can load up these old samples and use your M as if you had a PPG Wave + WaveTerm combo."

New filters: Notch 12dB / Oct, LP 24dB/Oct, BP 24 dB/Oct,HP 24 dB/Oct, Notch 24 dB/Oct, Sin Waveshaper + LP 12 dB/Oct, Dual LP/BP 12 db/Oct, BandStop 12 dB/Oct. Almost all of the MicroWave 2 XT's digital filters are now available on the M.

Introducing the Vectra Synthesizer...

The Vectra is a unique digital-analog hybrid synthesizer providing four oscillators, white and pink noise sources, four ring modulators, a four-channel mixer, five LFO’s, six morphing envelopes, six primary multimode analog filter types, a main analog VCA, and numerous internal modulation routings and VCA’s controlling modulation amounts.

It really is like having a powerful self-contained semi-modular synthesizer with approximately 500 internal signal routings, and around 256 storable sound parameters.

The Vectra's synthesis architecture is designed to allow the greatest flexibility in recreating multiple synthesis techniques of the past while introducing several new innovations and methods.

The oscillators are digital as this provides the highest degree of tuning stability, while allowing both traditional virtual analog waveforms and 500 digital waveforms. With features like oscillator Sync, PWM, our new waveform Phase Slice, and Fade features, independent glide times per oscillator, constant beat detuning, monophonic and eight paraphonic voice modes, not to mention FM, AM, Ring-modulation, and dedicated LFO’s, Envelopes, and VCA’s per oscillator really make these oscillators a power house.

The four-channel mixer is unique in that it provides an even balance when mixing multiple sources, either manually with the joystick, or applying automated vector mixing, or mixer modulation.

The five LFO’s provide 500+ waveforms to choose from, with their frequency spanning from sub-audio to well into the audio range. Their frequency can be stationary or track keyboard notes with glide. Waveforms can sync to any waveform phase at a note-on, and they can be frequency modulated as well. In short they can be used as LFO’s, complex envelopes, or audio rate oscillators.

The six morphing envelopes are really something else. With each envelope providing initial Delay, Attack, Hold, Decay, Sustain, Release, as well as a loop time when set to Repeat. Ultra precise and snappy, they provide envelope times from 0ms to 14.7 seconds per each stage. Each envelope provides multiple envelope curve selections, and can be one-shot, normal envelope types, or looping. And did you notice they can morph? Yes, that’s right! All six envelopes can morph and modulate between two individual values per each envelope stage.

IGNITION 3 Early Progress / Playtesting

video upload by Major OSC

"noodling around on a few of the presets, some of which are in fully realized form, while others need work. playing em for a good length of time, especially with a backbeat, is always a good indicator of where they're at, how they feel to play, how they sound in a mix etc. Figured I'd post a few of these periodically.
MajorOSC.com will be converting to a new brand identity in the coming weeks. Aperture Sound Lab, a join venture between MajorOSC and AlphaCodeSynth, will serve as the new platform for all preset banks to be release on. All MajorOSC preset banks will continue to be made available once the new site is up, and all banks will be labeled and credited as such. Aperture Sound Lab marks a new beginning for both MajorOSC and AlphaCodeSynth, allowing both to combine their sound design talents at various points, while retaining full control of the individual sound design brands and styles."

NEW!!! OSIRIS - Bi-Fidelity Wavetable Osc by Modbap Modular

video upload by SoundsAndGear

"Dope new module announcement from Modbap Modular! Osiris is a powerful and neatly packed 12hp bi-fidelity wavetable oscillator with 7+ timbre modes including FM and phase modulation, an independent sub-oscillator, LoFi processing, extensive cv modulation capabilities, a pitch quantizer, 4 banks of 32 wavetables each (total of 128 wavetables across four banks), the ability to load user wavetables via micro sd card (not included) and it's own free open-source wavetable editor (OsirisEdit)."

via Modbap

Osiris is a bi-fidelity wavetable oscillator with 4 banks of 32 wavetables each (128 wavetables in total). Each wavetable has 32 waveforms at 256 samples per waveform.

Osiris is designed to be used as a powerful bi-fidelity wavetable oscillator with an added sub-oscillator. The sub-oscillator has its own v/oct, mix knob, and mono output. If the sub-oscillator output is not patched, the sub-oscillator output is normalized to the mix out. Essentially, the sub-oscillator can act as its own independent oscillator allowing Osiris to be utilized as two separate oscillators.

The Sub Wave allows for the selection of the sub oscillator’s waveform. The waveforms are – Square, Sine, Triangle, -1, -2, offering basic waves at a lower frequency than the main oscillator that add weight to the main oscillator. -1 and -2 represent a copy of the wavetable at 1 octave below and 2 octaves below the main oscillator, respectively.

The built-in VCA and decay parameters allow for wide-open melodic fades as well as easy percussive plucks.

Timbre Modes are a set of selectable forms of waveshaping that vastly expand Osiris’ range in sound possibilities. All of the Timbre Modes live on one CV-enabled knob, allowing for smooth morphing between modes which makes for some very cool blended timbres between modes. Timbre Amount allows for dialing in as much or as little of the selected timbre as desired.

Timbre Modes (Waveshapers)

Unison – Layers a second oscillator that detunes from slight beatings up to an octave.
Bend – Compresses the waveform to a thinner shape
Fold – Introduces symmetric 2-stage wave folding by first mirroring the waveform and then folding it
Sync – Repeats the cycle count of the waveform within a Hanning window, making the edges soft
Noise– Adds window-synced noise to the waveform phase
FM x 1 – Applies phase modulation to the oscillator using the same waveform
FM x ….8 – The FM scans through a ratio of 1 up to a ratio of 8 smoothly, with mixed stages in between

As a bi-fidelity wavetable oscillator, Osiris runs at 96khz for high-quality sound output but it also has a classic, pleasing, and musically gritty LoFi flavor. The CV-enabled Lofi knob controls the fidelity of the oscillator allowing it to go from subtle degradation to complete destruction. The sound of the LoFi parameter takes inspiration from old amiga computer audio characteristics, introducing sample jitter, phase drift, and resolution reduction. Because it is not a simple on/off switch, dialing in just the right amount of LoFi texture is easy.

Osiris allows the use of user wavetables via a micro-SD card (not included). Users may create, edit and save their own wavetables using OsirisEdit, an open-source wavetable editor designed specifically for OSIRIS to create wavetables and WavPaks (groups of Osiris ready wavetables organized into folders) that are compatible with the Modbap Modular Osiris oscillator. More on Osirisedit here.

Osiris was developed in collaboration with Ess Mattisson of Fors (Fors.fm).

Studio Electronics Introduces the SE-3X

Priced at $2199

"Three + Four = Heaven. The SE-3X: a three-voice paraphonic synth with four discrete, classic hardware filters.

Seen where the sound of success was heard, the SE-1(X)’s popularity with hitmakers, film composers and sound designers has spanned decades, and the 'X never quite rode off into the sunset. Now, it's blazing back with software sweetening and sweeping hardware refinements — innovations worthy of 30 years of rack time… and your time. Built attractively, built solidly, bringing you the bump 'n' thump and higher frequency clarity and warmth that has been the secret weapon of legends. ‘3X software available as an upgrade for ‘1X users.

1 hour with Sequential Prophet 10 and Zoia - No Dialogue

video by Major OSC

"Prophet 10 - 1 full hour. Non-stop playing.
At various points I'll use summit's reverb, delay, and chorus, but limited enough to allow the dry signal to still be distinguishable. At certain points, where you hear the stereo image become much bigger and wider, that's the Empress Zoia. All of this made possible using sends off a Mackie 16 channel VLZ4, feeding post fader directly to a prism sound titan. Full of deadmau5 and Pryda covers, along with some random improv. Big pads in the last 10 minutes. Enjoy!

Weekly tutorials available at patreon.com/majorosc

"James High, AKA MajorOSC, has been busy the past few months, designing many of the presets you may have recently heard in the new Modal Electronics Cobalt8 videos. He was also hired by Modal to do music for all of their Cobalt launch videos. But he wasn't quite finished...

Side Story:

After handing over the Masters of the 30-second Cobalt demo songs he had finished in the days prior to launch, MajorOSC teamed up with fellow Cobalt sound designer AlphaCodeSynth to work on an extended mix of the official demo song. AlphaCode used his own presets from Cobalt8 and produced an outstanding extended mix. You can have a listen here.

MajorOSC plans to continue releasing commercial patch banks, while also designing factory presets for several other company's upcoming synthesizers, both hardware and software. No further details at this time.

It's very likely you'll be hearing early patch previews on MajorOSC's new patreon page. His tutorials on Hydrasynth have been deep. His studio tips come from over a decade of production on Ableton, Logic and now, exclusively on Bitwig. Other synths he plans to feature in tutorials are the Novation Summit, and the Modal Cobalt8.

MajorOSC hit hard times last month with a series of setbacks related to the impact of the pandemic. He is doing everything possible to keep things running smoothly in the meantime. Head over to patreon.com/majorosc to gain access to the great tutorials, and keep the wheels in motion for this ambitious sound designer by becoming a patron.
